I FFEL THE NEED - THE NEED FOR SPEED

From an early age, I have been fascinated by aviation—the elegance of aircraft, the precision of engineering, and the sense of freedom they represent. What began as a childhood passion gradually evolved into a lifelong pursuit. By turning this dream into my profession, I have been able to combine creativity with my enthusiasm for aviation.

Today, my daily work is closely connected to the aviation industry, where I translate complex ideas into clear, compelling visual design. With a strong focus on detail, functionality, and aesthetics, I create graphic solutions that reflect both technical excellence and creative vision.

MAKING OF

Each illustration is created entirely in a digital environment—from the first sketch to the final artwork. The process begins with carefully selected reference photographs, which are converted into precise, true-to-scale line drawings. This step ensures accurate proportions and captures even the smallest technical details. Once the line work is complete, the basic shapes and color areas are established in Photoshop. From there, the illustration is gradually refined: structures and proportions are carefully adjusted, surfaces are defined, and depth is created through shading and highlights. Fine details, textures, and markings are then added across multiple layers, allowing for maximum control and flexibility throughout the process. This layered workflow makes it possible to achieve a high level of realism and clarity while maintaining a clean, graphic style. The result is a technically accurate and visually striking illustration that reflects both precision and passion for detail.

REFERENCES

Over the past years, I have created more than 100 aircraft illustrations for a wide range of clients and projects. These include commissions for various air forces, individual squadrons, as well as illustrations for books, magazines, and other editorial publications. Each project is approached with a strong focus on accuracy, authenticity, and visual clarity, ensuring that every aircraft is represented with the highest level of detail and respect for its technical and historical background. I am always open to new commissions and collaborations. If you are interested in a custom illustration or would like more information about available options, formats, or licensing, please feel free to get in touch. I will be happy to discuss your project in detail.

Saab 105OE – 30th Anniversary Livery

To celebrate 30 years of Saab 105OE operations in Austria, a special commemorative livery was created for the Airpower airshow in 2000. The idea was inspired by the 3rd Squadron / Fliegerregiement 3 at the Vogler Air Base in Hörsching, Upper Austria. The color scheme incorporated all four colors used by the previous squadrons—red, green, blue, and yellow—representing the units stationed at Hörsching and Zeltweg. Each aircraft also featured a letter designation, referred to internally as, for example, the “Yellow Alpha” (YA‑01) or the “Red Bravo” (RB). In addition, the design paid tribute to Austria’s first Saab 105 aerobatic team,…

Pilatus PC-7 VIPER Aircraft Livery

The Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer “VIPER” of the Flying School in Zeltweg, Austria, has been a familiar and striking presence in the skies for more than 20 years. Its distinctive appearance is the result of a carefully planned design and execution process that began in December 2002. At that time, the Flying School approached Gerhard Kempf Grafikdesign with the request to develop a special livery for a Pilatus PC-7. The commission covered the entire process—from the initial design concept through to on-site execution in Zeltweg, Styria. The brief called for a bold snake motif, specifically a viper, to mark the…

Pilatus PC-6 BUNTER FREDI Aircraft Livery

A unique special livery for a military aircraft. Presented at the AIRPOWER 2000 air show in Zeltweg, BUNTER FREDI is still flying after 25 years in its original livery, designed by me. It even made the cover of the model building club magazine „IPMS Modell Panorama 2020/2.“ Here’s a look back at how the project began more than two decades ago: In the summer of 2000, AIRPOWER was marked in red on the calendars of all aviation enthusiasts. And the organizer, the Austrian Armed Forces, was also busy with preparations. There was a sense of optimism (or should we say…
